“So Elizabeth, what’s your story?”
Like most entrepreneurs, I used to have what I affectionately call a “soul-sucking job.” Raised in a family of scientists and health care pros (we have an engineer, 2 nurses, an MBA and an emergency doctor among us), I earned a masters degree in computer science and spent 10 years in technology. At first, I adored it. I got to use my creativity, and I loved the camaraderie of being on a team. But getting paged at 2 in the morning gets old after a while… and then there was that little matter of, “What am I supposed to be doing with my life?” ?
For years, I’d turned away from the deep yearning in my heart. I told myself stories about what I thought I really wanted to do, all the while ignoring what my intuition was so desperately trying to tell me. Then came the wake-up call (or “oh sh*t!” moment, as I like to call it). I didn’t have it all figured out – not by a long shot! – but there was one thing I knew for sure: the soul-sucking job had to go.
A writer and storyteller since birth (practically!), I began writing sales copy to support myself. Soon it became clear who my ideal clients were: spirit-based and purpose-driven business owners. And they needed full-blown marketing help, not just copy! They were frustrated with the “hard sell” tactics of most marketing pros. So I began to put together the basics of what would become The Abundant Business System, my step-by-step marketing system, using the strategies myself to fill my copywriting practice.
Soon, opportunities to share the system came my way. There was just one problem – I was terrified! A marketing pro who resists marketing herself is ironic, I know… but the truth is, I was really afraid to put myself out there. I was afraid to boldly say, “You know what? I am good at this.” It felt like bragging, and I worried endlessly about what people might think.
I had offered to give a workshop on my system for getting clients at an annual industry event. When the time came to actually do it, I stalled and made excuses – in fact, I almost canceled. And then… I got the Divine Kick In The Seat Of The Pants ™.
I call her Lady Universe, because the Divine Feminine is who guides me, and She has been guiding me for a very long time. I realized that what I wanted to do with my life… my dreams… my calling and deep desire to impact more people… all of that required me to overcome the fear and step up to the plate. Lady Universe said, “You have to do this.”
When Lady Universe starts talking, I listen. And when She tells me to do something… I can’t really say no. (What can I say? That’s just how I roll. ?) And so I took that first step in faith…
I left that first workshop with an overflowing abundance of love, appreciation and testimonials. Those who were there recommended me to their friends... clients started getting incredible results… and the momentum grew. Since then, I’ve shared my strategies with hundreds of entrepreneurs, talked to dozens and dozens of them about their business, coached and taught my system over and over again. And here’s what I learned along the way…
There is a concept from Aristotle called entelechy. Entelechy is the process of taking the essence, or potential of something and making it real. Each of us has an essence inside of us, a divine gift… what I like to call your brilliance. We all have it, but it’s up to each one of us to develop it, bring it forward… make that potential real. I realized that marketing is one of the very best, most powerful tools we have to do just that.
You have something incredible to share with the world. Marketing is simply a way to get your brilliance out there… a rich, full realization of your divine gifts expressed through your business. I know firsthand how challenging and overwhelming it can feel at first… and how gratifying it is when you finally break through, claim your brilliance, and allow it to attract the right people, opportunities, and more income to you.
When my clients tell me how confident they feel once they start landing clients left and right, making more money and making a bigger difference… when they tell me how empowered they are in their business after they get “the marketing thing” figured out… that’s when I know I’m living my brilliance as a catalyst of entelechy: to help others, especially spirited women, become what they are becoming… to inspire them to bring their gifts forward and manifest them in the world. A few facts about me…
- I live in Brooklyn, New York with my incredible husband,
Leland (he’s an illustrator and comics artist).
- I’m a professional fiction writer, and my primary
medium is comics. My next graphic novel (i.e., novel in comics
form) will be with Tor Books via their website, beginning
in the fall of 2009. I believe that story is one of our greatest
tools for facilitating personal transformation.
- I was raised in Maine and consider myself to be a die-hard
Northeastern girl. My favorite place in the world, however,
is New York City. My inner “city mouse” and “country
mouse” duke it out constantly.
- I play fiddle and have a passion for traditional Irish
music. I used to play in the NYC subways – yes, really!
While I don’t play much any more (being focused on my
business and writing), nothing lifts my spirits faster (or
inspires words quicker) than jigs and reels.
- I love jewelry, am an avid beader and am rarely without
a necklace, even at home.
- I love to knit, especially with luxury yarns. I’m
one of those “instant gratification” knitters
– mostly hats! Like most knitters, I’m obsessed
and love to meet others. (One of these days, I’m going
to start a knitting group for spirited entrepreneurs!)
- My top 3 values are love, creativity and freedom. They are the driving force behind everything I do.
